Sure, our opponents only had seven and their jerseys were a bit intimidating, but EPZ responded with some solid play and good passing (and 0 penalty minutes) to outscore our already forfeited opponents. We had a few pretty goals (including a beaut by the Nikko sisters... our version of Serena and Venus) and a few pretty almost goals... a good tune-up for next week's tourney. Thanks to super-sub Joey Z (and his 1.00 EPZ goals per game average). And, don't forget to look to Geeks on the Web for all your customized helmet decal (not just "stickers") needs (yellow not available). For a limited time only. | ||

Uptown Bar (Minneapolis A Broomball Playoffs) |

4-1
| (from Ian) EPZ made history tonight in advancing to the quarterfinals (OK, the second round) and getting their first ever win in the Minneapolis A Broomball playoffs. The first half was a nail-biter, with lots of chances by both teams. A bit of rough play (and coarse language, uttered bravely by an EPZ forward who shall remain nameless... "hey Mr. Ref Sir... he threw his stick too!") resulted in a key shooter from Uptown Bar being ejected from the game (temper, temper). EPZ kept the ball in the offensive zone for much of the half, but were unable to convert. Then came the second half. Soon after the whistle, Pat took the ball coast to coast... and a diving Jessi slammed a rebound home. Uptown bar answered pretty quickly, but the EPZ floodgates were just opening. Julie gave Ian a nice pass in front of the net, which he converted with a little shovel shot. Bill got on the board a little later, faking the pass to Pat, then sneaking around the goal to beat the keeper for a short-handed goal. Finally, as the buzzer was about to sound, Craig slammed one in from 30 feet out, putting the nail in the coffin. Jon was a key force in the middle, stealing the ball and making pretty passes. Backing up our strong offense was an even stronger defense. Steph and Hatti contained the ball, and continually put themselves in harm's way to keep shots away from Leif. Not that they needed to, however! Leif made some unbelievable saves, totally changing the course of the game at crucial moments. Great job guys (and a whole lot of fun)! Thanks to our stellar subs Julie and Carrie for their solid play at short notice. | ||

EPZ 2003 came to an end Friday night with the Zooers dropping a hard-fought second-round play-off game. Overmatched, EPZ left it all on the ice (including playing on hobbled knees and blocking the ball with our face... ahh... thank goodness for helmets), only losing by one to a team that controlled the ball for much of the game. Ian was able to convert a breakaway in the first half to tie the game at one (one of our few good scoring opportunities). The majority of the game was played at this deadlock, until a sharpshooter from our opponents hit a blast from the point for the game-winner. The game finished with EPZ showing their true never-say-quit selves with 52 seconds of fight, but in the end, couldn't get the equalizer. Good game by all... and heck, got us to hot cocoa, Chicken in a Biscuit, Creme de Mente and red meat all the sooner. Click here to see last night's stats. It's never good to see a season come to an end (well, last year was okay, remember?), but I don't think anyone can deny that it was a great year for EPZ and a whole lot of fun. Excellent job broomballers. I can't wait to see what next year brings. See you on the pick-up circuit (and at the EPZ banquet? Steph? Craig?). |
St. Paul Winter Carnival Tournament
(Saturday, Jan. 25 - 6:00 PM & 7:40 PM / Sunday, Jan. 26 - 10:40 AM and/or
12:20 PM)
Game 1 (Saturday) - Played a Champs team that was more organized,
better positioned, and well, better dressed than us. EPZ's incredible defense
and strong goaltending held off a barrage of some 30 shots (we estimated that
we had three). Late in the second, Champs grabbed a 1-0 lead just to lose it
30 seconds later on a run by Ian. Game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Game 2 (Saturday) - EPZ went from tying a team we should have lost to in game
one to losing to a team we should have beaten in game two. With the temperature
dropping down to Hoth status, EPZ came-out with high expectations after Billy
ran the ice and hit a shot off of the top bar. These expectations were not met
as EPZ could not make-up for two-first half goals by the Ice Holes. Pat cut
the deficit in half with a late goal, but it was too little too late, as EPZ
could not overcome the Ice Holes Big Girl in the Crease Defense. That's how
it ended (2-1 loss). Course, the loss probably got us another tournament game
(glass is half-full?).
Game 3 (Sunday) - For some reason, I don't remember this one that well, but
I know we won. Our opponents got the first score, but EPZ kept their heads high.
Ian tied it. Pat put in the go ahead. Ian hit an insurance goal (using the move,
I might add
which has never successfully been worked in EPZ tournament
play). Jon put the nail in the coffin sprinting to redirecting an all-out hustle
assist from Carrie. EPZ win (4-1). It was a good Sunday morning showing.
Game 4 (Sunday) - Came-out strong against pool winners Slip Shots with Billy
beating their goalie through the slicks in front of the net for an early EPZ
lead. Pat picked-up yet another penalty (this one costly) that allowed the game
to be tied-up. Unbelievable goaltending by Leif kept us in the game until a
fluke Slip Shot second-half flurry that left EPZ down by four and with a broken
stick on the sideline. Although unable to make-up the deficit, EPZ kept their
composure with Ian adding another goal and Pat (sort of) hitting a goal at the
end of regulation. EPZ lost 5-3, but played tough against a good team.
Overall, EPZ had a solid tournament. A couple of minor letdowns, but overall,
played tough against some strong competition. Kudos to our super subs Julie,
Kristen and Carrie. Also, grand play by our girls (Steph, Bic, Hatti) on defense
(helmet anyone?). Good hustle by the boys (Craig, Jon, Bill, Ian, Pat). Outstanding
goaltending (Leif). Sure, I'm a bit sore and have only starting to get some
of the feeling back in my fingers (the magical healing power of Cream of Mushroom
soup), but it was well worth it! Maybe somewhat sad, but EPZ's best tournament
showing to date!
