2-0
Despite the light showers, we brought some lively bats (um, six home run outs) and took to the field as the defending 2008 fall league tournament champs should. We smoked our opponents in game one (although, our opponent's first inning pitcher did have some control issues) only giving up one run and put together a nice come-from-behind win in game two to earn a week one sweep. And, the fun didn't end there. We strolled in to the Hogger to find new menus. After 10+ years, things can change (course, still stay away from the 8 ounce sirloin). Also note, 2009 might be the year of the Jeff - .857 on base percentage. Good start. Let's bring out the parade of subs next week and take two more!

Granted, we bump up against a not so strong opponent (and a bit elderly too. Two of the guys had been playing for 34 years!), but the numbers are still a bit ridiculous. We batted .795 as a team and scored 53 runs in six innings of play (the ump, another elderly fellow, did some crazy flip-flopping so we only batted three times each game). Goodness.

What can brown do for you? Evidently, get you a sweep. Took another two. This time, from an old nemesis. Fielding was sharp and our bats were there when we needed them. It was also nice to get Dar back (No walks. Hit our only homer. Still doesn't know how to use this page to find the time for next week's game). Fantastic start to the season (although, we also started last summer 6-0) with a team batting average currently over .600. Ridiculous. Next week at the Hogger... Operation: Ice Cream Sundae. Who's with me?

8-0! The best start in our history. Won the first game pretty handily. Blew a 16-8 lead in the second game, but hung on to win, scoring the winning run with two-outs on a close play at the plate (yes, the catcher dropped it) to win it 19-18. The last inning had additional close plays that could have gone either way (yes Dar, I think the ump gave us a couple of calls because of the earlier 'interference" call). Windy, dusty, hot and humid night, but the Seeds still prevailed! And, the age old question of "what will happen first, Caven getting walked or Dan hitting a home run?" has been answered thanks to Caven's intentional walk in the seventh. Next week, Rainbow clears the fence.

First and foremost...SMOKING KILLS. Now that we got that out of the way...no pregame for the Seeds tonight (unless you count the Beef N' Chedda's JC and I picked up before the game) and it showed as we booted, mis-throwed and errorred our way to a five run deficit in the first half inning (we should note that we ever so graciously agreed to swap our home team status and took the field to start the game). Our opponents could hit, but got tired fast...and were pretty lazy in the field. That's bad combo when you only have three outfielders (17 of our 36 hits were extra baggers). Ended up being a couple of ten run routes as we kept our undefeated season alive. We'll bump into a couple of tough opponents to finish the season. Let's keep the bats hot!

This would be a lot easier to write if I still wasn't so peeved at the ice cream sundae fiasco at the Hogger. Hope the late-night boys earned back some of my pride through Buck Hunter. But, I digress (at least until next Wednesday at the Hogger). The game was five to five after one inning so we were all expecting some fireworks. We continued to stay hot while our opponents majorly cooled off (they didn't have much for gloves in their infield either). In what was expected to be a couple of close games, we earned two ten-run victories. For those of you who are counting, that's 15 straight wins. And really, the stats are getting a bit ridiculous. We batted .676 for the night (six sacrifices didn't hurt) and now have a team average over .575. Wow. Now, go tear down your garage for some firewood.

Well, losing these two definitely wasn't as fun as the 12 straight we won to open the season. Came out flat and things quickly got worse. Salty, subbing for us, dislocated his thumb in the first inning on a play at the plate. We were down to nine. Keith later pulled his hammy. We were down to eight and a half. Who knows if us having ten guys would have even made a difference. We just didn't have the energy and the games never felt close. Hopefully we saved that energy it for the start of the playoffs next week. Thanks Todd and Shon (sorry Shon!) for subbing. I promise we'll be more fun in the future!

First, let's give some big props to our captain/coach Grant, who despite his injured hand and abstinence from alcohol, continues to show-up and root for the team. And, not only did he thoroughly do our books (including filling out, yes, the weather entry - "70 Degrees and Overcast"), but he also scouted and kept a book on our opponents (including his snazzy names/identifiers of "Lefty," "Fast," "White Shirt" and my favorite... "Black"). Nice work Grant!

On to the action on the field. The first game started off close (we were actually down 1-3), but we rallied with solid bats and solid fielding to take control and win 14-8. A nice six run cushion in this total runs scenario playoff game. Perhaps we were a bit overconfident, but game two started out rough with us being down 0-5 (darn grand slam) and then later 1-9. You could sense a couple of brief moments of us sinking down and rolling over. But, with a timely walk here, an outstretched grab there, and some solid shots to the gaps...we grind-ed our way back into the game, took back the momentum and ended-up ten running them (19-9...yup, 18 unanswered runs) in five innings. Personally, I thought it was our most satisfying game of the season. And, some good momentum as we head into the semifinals.

Yeah, scoring 8 runs in two games isn't going to cut it. We came out quick with four runs in our first at bat, but then cooled off, weren't able able to string hits together (.370 average for the week) and were just plain flat. To their credits, our opponents were strong in the field and took away balls we would have seen go for hits in past weeks. Course, the quick games and 7:30 end time did make for a nice time to just sit and enjoy a couple brews at the park (huge props to Grant and his broken cooler carrying hand for that!). Assume there were some fun Hogger antics I missed as well [insert those here].

So yes, we had an "off" week. With that said, we've had more "on" weeks than any season in the past. We've had a great summer of good ball! Let's make sure we bring our "on" game in a couple of weeks and finish the summer strong!

I think Mrs. Caven put it best - "Nice game guys". We put it on the line (some might say we Chased Our Chuckwagon) and clinched our spot as third place champs. A strong finish to the season as we got payback for an earlier loss to a familiar foe. We outplayed them throughout (the exception being the seven runs we gave up in the seventh inning of game one), even earning a ten-run victory in the second game. A number of double plays got us out of early jams, and some timely hits, including a slump-busting dinger by Keith gave us a comfortable lead most of the night. And what better way to celebrate than with a $15 plate of anywhere from 12 to 14 ribs funded on the backs of your (uh hum... beer drinking) teammates (although Dar says that's a pretty good deal for ribs). We'll see when I hit the leftovers tomorrow. Good season boys (our best winning percentage season, best team batting average season, 25 more total runs than any other season). We should also note that Caven hit a Mauer-esqu .725 for the season, our first guy to break .700 in three years (course, he was the last guy to do it). Stay loose as we head into fall ball and a potential three-peat.
