Ice Hogs

1-0

Nothing fancy about this recap, it was just a fun EPZ night (with a friendly opponent). The ice, excluding the moguls on the far boards, was the best we've seen all year. We were as fast as I've ever seen (please edit out when I tripped and used my helmet grill as a cheese grater on the rough stuff), crisp with our passing and airtight on defense (we must only be 30-something!). Nobody wants to goaltend in a one goal game, but Leif, when tested, was unbeatable (even when it was all red in the crease). Steph and Peg navigated the mid-ice beautifully transitioning a number of fast breaks. Pam and Bic (those demure Asian gals) busted up an uncountable number of breaks. Pat E., Billy, and Craig were everywhere and peppered their goalie (who was amazing) with shot after shot (we must have had a dozen drawbacks). Toddy had a sweat goal to open the second half that was taken away (crease?... come one ref... I like that you're actually making some calls... but where's the consistency?... uh, hum... high stick?). Ian had some sweet feeds and Jessi, who again was magic with the stick, setup our only goal with a big early blast and rebound which I was able to tap in after just subbing in (I'm a glory hound that way). Excellent everybody! I loved tonight! We'll scab a bit to fill the roster for Wednesday, but it was great to see the full team tonight (and come on... that's one good looking group!). See you Wednesday!

Red Team?
2-0
6-3 OT

Parade... here we come again (also known as skipping Chapters 13 and 14 and going straight to the good stuff)! Not sure if we worked harder to find subs (tactics included asking pregnant women, failed dates and the topper, your entire class of 80 students... well done Leif!). Obviously, huge thanks to our super subs Mary Sue, Andrea, Molly and Dan... but not having our regulars and struggling to field a team did not create the pregame excitement that usually spurs a win. Nonetheless... we won. Billy got it going early with a sweet solo goal for a one to zero lead. Fwop! Swoot! Zwipe! All of the sudden we were down at halftime one to three. Then The Sign came out from our mystery super fan (okay, Steph knows him) and everyone was at ease. Leif closed the door in the second half and even though we were usually shooting on a mass of red players (bunching anyone?), Billy was able to get a second goal early in the second half. We controlled and passed cleanly finally tieng the game at threes with a sweet score by Pat E. on a beautiful feed from Dan. Overtime? Sudden death (not)? No goalies? No problem. The extra session was dominated by EPZ with our opponents barely getting a sniff of our zone much less a shot. Steph got the golden goal. Dan walked one in. And Steph slammed in a second goal to end the game. Who'd of thunk it? See you Parade for the big one. Spinach dip will be waiting the victor!

CoRec A Championship Game

3:00 (Parade!)
Grease Lightning
2-1
1-3

I'll keep it short. Craig had a great goal to prevent the shutout. Leif once again showed that he owns Parade with an amazing performance. All of EPZ raised their games, ran so hard and played with a lot of heart. But, we ran into a team with skills we hadn't seen prior this season. Our athleticism kept us in the game as long as we could, but in the end, their speed and positioning were too much for us to handle (sub anyone?). With all that said, I still very much have that "losing never felt so good" attitude. We had an amazing playoff run (a 1-0 win and a 6-3 overtime win... both on unmatched team efforts with a different player stepping up when they had to). In the last day, I've found myself hanging my head a bit over missed chances, but overall, the season run makes me smile and I find myself full of pride and love. This is a great team... and in my eyes... second to none. We missed Ian! We welcomed Peg and Pat! We'll do it again next year (yes Hatti, you too) with that being the tenth year of EPZ for some of us. Can't wait! Thanks everyone. - Sooks

Broomtastic
1-0
6-0

Welcome Peg and Pat! Welcome back Leif! Couple points to note... at least four of your teammates went to bed later than 4am on Saturday. Can you guess who? No matter... there's no way the 'tastics were going to break through the Pacific Rim and Chu-Chi tunnels of Asia, the Blitzkrieg of the German Front, and some random Ghengis Khan Mongolia reference. The sun never sets on the EPZ empire!

Now, on to the game. (from Matt) EPZ took to the ice in their 2006 season opened on Sunday, January 8th against Broomtastic. EPZ came out firing, peppering the goalie early and Bill got an unassisted goal from the slot on the first shift of the game. Mark one up for EPZ - that set the tone for the game. Craig finished the half with a one-timer goal off a pass from Jessi in the corner. 2-0 at the half. Broomtastic ended up being more spastic than tastic and had a few wild brooms flying. I notable moment was when their biggest guy collapsed on the rink after an ankle shot from Bic - the EPZ thug (yeah, right). Bic and Pam broke up numerous fast break opportunities and held their scorers in check. Todd slapped the 3rd goal in on the edge of the crease - assisted by Jessi. The 4th goal of the game was probably the prettiest play of the day. A high shot from the corner by Jessi to a waiting Pat Sukhum just on the edge of the crease. Pat went up to get the ball , pulled it down with his hand and swatted it on the bou n ce for the score. Steph sealed the deal with a 5th goal near the end of the game. (and I guess Bill had one more sloppy goal... at least according to Bill). Peg had some nice containment play at the mid position, Pat Eiden had some great passes and Leif put up the shutout! A decided 6-0 win a nd a good clean game. Nice start to the season!

Meat Apple
2-0
8-0?
(from Billy) Meat Apple was no match for EPZ in the late game. With Leif out of commission, Todd got the call to play between the pipes. Todd proved that he is very capable net-minder. Despite a number of nice shots, Todd chalked up a shut-out extending EPZ's streak to 11 months and 2 weeks since our last goal given up! Todd received help from some great overall team defense especially with the huge spark provided by a super substitutes Abby and Michele. On offense, EPZ had a great game as well. Pat and Craig had some made some great end-to-end goals, highlighted by Craig's run in the first couple minutes finishing unassisted with a nice scoop to the upper corner. John, another subbing superstar newcomer, also set up numerous goals with some nice stick-work and passing and finished off with a goal of his own (after getting taken down from behind... and not having it called by the ref!). Steph continued her full rink dominance (despite a pulled quad), somehow consistently getting back on defense and contributing up front. All in all, the game was in hand at half, but we piled on a bunch more at the end of the game as Meat Apple pushed forward. Let's cal it 8-0, though I have no idea.

P.E.
3-0
4-0
In a rough one with 14 total penalty minutes (10 for a light toss of the stick), EPZ out-Toddied our opponents for our third straight shutout of the season (it also could have been our dozen-ball warm-up). Thanks to Matt's notes, here's how it all played out.. Scoring was dry early on as both teams applied some good pressure but couldn't beat either of the on-their-game goalies. Yoga Billy broke the seal with a big swing on a feed from wrapped-up Stephy. Still tight, Craig then ran the rink coast to coast and fed Todd for a beaut of a second goal. P.E. had some breaks, but were once again shut down by the D of one-armed Biccy, Peg (no worries, no one is going to kill you) and super repeat subber Michele. Final goals were tallied by Craig on a sweet sliding chip over the goalies off of a rebound from Pat off of a rebound from Jessi and then Mr. Eiden (fresh off of week's rest waiting for the plumber) put the final nail in the coffin punching in a reboud off of a blast from Jessi. And, all of this while a less than 100% Leify sprawled left and right to preserve the shutout. Great, fun game all! Who thinks another shutout next week? Want to bet? I'm already ready to throw out the doubling cube!

Women rule! Bic was a wall in net. Peg poked away countless runs by our opponents and had her best game of the season. Steph was everywhere. Our gals played themselves into exhaustion as we hit the ice with six players versus our opponents eight. Despite being out-manned, we still managed a very competitive game, at one point even leading four to one. Craig was everywhere and had a beautiful run for a goal. Bill added a sweet stick play backdoor goal as well. Pat E. had a blast for a score and Pat S. cleaned-up some tenacious play by Toddy (and Steph) for a point. Leif, forced out of net because of personnel issues, showed his give all for the team attitude and played tough everywhere. Hatti was the super fan. That's all I can remember. Oh, the ref was terrible and made me mad. Thanks for the photos Hatti and Leif! See you in the playoffs (tomorrow)!

Miracles on Ice
4-1
6-1?
Well, we bid adieu to EPZ 2006! The season started out a bit sticky (more like soupy) due to some warm weather (who are we to complain?), but finished-up strong! The cold took a little break this afternoon and we had a nice, sunny February day in the park (okay, at the rink). I don't remember much from the game, but everyone played well in a very relaxed atmosphere. EPZ adoptee John H. had a had trick and Butch had to have added at least two more. We also played a bit of pickup afterwards with all of the EPZers (except for me... traitor!) who stuck around experiencing another win on a last second goal (with the move!) by Craig. Good day of broomball! Pack-up your pads, wash your jersey and hang up your helmet. No worries, they'll be waiting for you next January when we start out tenth year of EPZ!
