Prime to Play
I know we didn't play super well (even though at times we were exceptionally scrappy), but I'm not sure why the scores were quite so lopsided? As Keith said, let's call this preseason, find our groove, and come out swinging next week. That is all for the start of this season.

Suck! This was not much fun. Granted, we won Game 2 as super sub Trina served at least 18 in a row (of which maybe 15 weren't even returned). Otherwise, nothing of note other than we played down to our opponent's level, played flat, flat, flat, and just had no zip. We'll try it again next week... and get these opponents again in March.

Serve It Up
In a eerily quiet gymnasium, 612! finally found some momentum and came out on the winning side of the contest. Many were up for MVP honors (including Robo-Arm), but the awards ceremony was led by Hatti, who won the comeback player of mid-January. Back to the ref we like. Back to sweeping all three. Back to smiling. We still may not have been perfect, but it felt as nice as a flavored milk straw (why didn't we think of that?). Let's keep it going next week as we either ride our talent, or Craig's children's book, from rags to riches!

We've got a good team, don't you think? We win... which is nice. And, we have great plays... which is nice. But, I also think we play well together, and play with good spirit, and have a lot of fun together. Sure, we give people the "All Day" talk once in awhile and like to "discuss" with the ref how legal it is to throw the ball over the net, but overall, I'm pretty psyched to be on this team. Ho Hum. And... on to the game. [that was easy!] We played a good opponent, and only won one of three. We had some sweet plays and dug everything, but some silly errors as well. We're not quite there, but we're not too far off either. If we had to win one, it's nice that it was the third game. If we had to lose two, it's too bad that it was to spazzy hot-head short shorts (aka loud pooper). At least we showed those desserts who was boss! Next week, the satisfaction score on our play will be five out of five (well, maybe four for Stephy).

Duck Moose
(from Craig) Like a crock pot, 612's season has taken some time and effort to heat up, and coming off Superbowl weekend, there was no reason for us to be hungry. However, we needed something to chew on... carrrrrne, or meat for you non Spanish speaking teammates, was the meal of choice as we devoured our opponents in all three games. With the mad scramble for a lady substitute behind us, Dzong (pronounced you-me) stepped to the plate and played well in her first appearance in the Brimhall Gymnasium. The telecommunication was working, as we seemed to cover and control the ball in even the oddest of situations. Suki, Keith and Steph were blocking machines, even if the ball was in the hallway before the touch was called. The passing came around, the sets were there and we managed to again prove to ourselves that we can play this game. Tighten up the service errors, choose wisely on hit/push situations, and putting the sets in the right spots will all be part of the focus over the remainder of the season. So pack your lunches, avoid the bubbles when you can, and we'll see you next week.

(from Bic) Not sure what happened, but we started off the night like a bunch of sleepy-heads, getting behind by more than 10 at one point. With the game nearly over, we finally woke up and rallied behind Trina’s dominant serves. While our efforts didn’t result in a win, we kept the momentum to take 2 and 3 with little fanfare, except for a “discussion” or two with the “Change Your Setting Style” ref. Even with the wins, I’d humbly suggest we might look to improve on a couple of things: 1) Let’s work on not selling out your team by “apologizing” to reffie; and 2) Let’s work on not selling out your teammate (even if it’s to make a point) with “Sticky” and groans. Ahem. For better, sidelined Stephy actually watched our games tonight, instead of gabbing on the phone. For even better, we relocated to Macaroni for a “tractor combine” feeding frenzy of bread, trios (bigger than the photo), free entrée AND free cake (no salt though – tuh). With full tummies, we had nothing left to do but ponder two of life’s great questions: Can you use “moist” in a sentence without referring to cake or sex? and Who gets naked with 80s hair? Carne. Carne.

Well, mostly, I remember a lot of blood. We played some young athletic team I didn't recognize. We won the first game. With the score tied in the second, Trina and Dzung (again, pronounced you-me) had a bit of a collision, and Dzung came out on the worse end of it (did I mention the blood?). Even thought it was a bit of a mess, she was an awesome sport about it (I would have been balling my eyes out). I missed what happened next as Craig and I drove her to the U, but I hear our squad of three (Hatti, Trina, and Keith) barely lost game two 26-27 versus their squad of six. Three might have been too few, but four was just enough. Upon our return to the gym, Craig "2x4" jumped in for the last half of game three and 612! was able to pull out a sweet comeback win. Good luck Dzung! Feel better very soon!

Prime to Play
Well that was pretty fun, huh? We did drop the first game (we didn't play too bad, we just didn't make a lot of plays). Course, from then on out, it was a carousel of highlights, scrappy play, juicy sets and strong net play as we won the next two (and, I might add, this was a strong opponent). Keith and Bic had a flurry of set-spike points to lead us to victory in the second game and continued their hot connection in the third. Trina bombed them with her serves and pinpoint placement. Hatti was digging fireballs. Craig had the play of the game coming out of nowhere to block their big man for a point. Steph used her strategic eye to scout our opponents. And Keith (yup, he was so good he gets his name mentioned twice) had the hit of the season... straight down like lightning bolts. Sweet! We're a strong end of season team and this was definitely our wake-up call! Let's keep firing from hear on out!

Spikers

We welcomed back Steph, Keith once again tested the effects of a pre-game happy hour (personally, I believe more testing is needed), and we all came out with good, scrappy energy right from the start. Although we were down early in every game, our mix of accurate passing, luscious sets, strong swings, and tenacious digs led us to victories in all three games. It was nice to have the old squad back... and see us play up to our potential. It might take awhile for this train to get rolling (yeah, there's only two games left), but when it does, our poor opponents better get off the tracks!

Hatti, next week, don't forget to ask me about the doggie bag, donut, horror movie, revolving door, black hole, Harley, blueberries, marching band, Australia, squirrel, quick-drying cement, safari, fruit stand, oyster, wheelchair, and of course, the apple.

Shazam! That's about all I remember. We did have some really pretty play with Steph bringing some thunder, Hatti scrapping-up the back row, and Bic setting-up both Craig and Keith for some monster spikes, but, in the end, we fell victim to our fatal flaw... playing to the level of our opponents. Our nonchalant attitude cost us in game three. Blah. No worries. We'll need no extra motivation next week. Short shorts is on his way!

(from Bic) Somebody call the lost and found! Somehow we lost Mr. Nice Home Improvement Ref tonight. We also managed to lose the SHAZAM. And dammit, we lost two games to Short Shorts. Scores: G1 = Good but not good enough, G2 = Great, G3 = Stinky. Not such a great way to end the season, but let’s take solace in our scrappiness. We seem to be honing our play-off-the-rafters skills (that is, until Inconsistent – Hatti’s Arch Nemesis – Reffie got in the way – Tuh). Stephy, remind us of that skill next season. Take notes in the bathroom if necessary. Take good care in the off-season, buddies. Be sure to talk about sex even though you’re wife may be leaning in and listening from six feet away, watch out for the vegetables in the jello, run home when you hear that whistle, watch out for asses sliding down the legs, and eat at Don Pablos, Sensors, Byerly’s, India Palace, Fridays (even with the rocks), Bakers Square, Red Lobster and whatever restaurant you can come up with to make the group more indecisive than ever before. 612!
