"Ahhh... piss" - Yup, that was about the only setback the whole night. And, moments later, the dripped cheddar cheese was easily sopped-up thanks to the sponge-like quality of deep fried potatoes. Seems odd to say at the first game of the season, but the Castor Canadensis played as well as I've seen in a long, long time - bump, set, spiking to three convincing wins. Big blocks, strong hits, sweet sets... how fun was that? And, how great were those orange shirts? Carry that stick, chew on that log, ride that tail down the river, stop paying attention, keep Leah on the payroll... excellent! Go Beavers! - And say it with pride.

HMM
(from Craig) Knowing our team... I'm guessing a few of us saw our opponents and were a little nervous. Well, it didn't take long for the Beavers to conquer their anxiety with feelings of domination. The first two games seemed effortless as nearly everything was working, with the exception of one hit that brought outright laughter from Stephy. Great bumps, sets, spikes and weak tips were just what the doctor ordered as the Nature's Engineers realized a squirrel is just a beaver with a sex change. The last game went to "Hmmm", but the only question the furs had was "would Bic bring her guns next week?". A resounding "Fuuuuuuurrrrrrr Sure" as we lick our lips.

Creative kisses, vertical jumping, flexed arm barely hang, hairy bottoms, and farting sit-ups (Pat needs a spotter) are just a hint of the challenges to come!

I'd Hit It
(from Leah) The showcase of the evening began with nervous energy and a roll of blue masking tape (a tape measure, too -- but then it sounds like a "male measuring contest," if you know what I mean -- ahem, anyway). It was time. Time for *drum roll please*....the vertical jump contest. As the women geared up for what was to come, the men discussed the strategic options. After the smoke and dust cleared, our tiny, Asian teammate came out on top at 18.5 inches. Congratulations, little one. Knowing that the men are much more competitive than the women, they competed next (even though it was not on the evening's competitive agenda). Suks topped the others at a whopping 31 inches. Sorry boys, no competition there. A big congrats goes out to our minority teammates.

Oh yes, there was some volleyball played before the showcase event -- we took the first and third games and just gave them the second one. Another night well played, team.

Legends

(from Mark) From the Legends representative: Man, this is embarrassing. How do you get swept by that bunch of orange beavers? We had them in the first game until that 6'6" pretty boy with the squirrel shirt started spiking them down without jumping. And we could have won the second one until that 4'8" chick with the (at least) 18" vertical served about 10 straight points. And we definitely would have gotten the last game until they conveniently rotated out that tan, good looking Caribbean guy who couldn't hit for crap. Still, we played them tough, and if it wasn't for our injuries, age and total number of good players equaling one, we could have beaten them - for sure...

P.S. Is it the shoes?

One Armed Bandits
(From Bic) (Written in a cultivated Southern drawl) Very sad to say, but the One Armed Bandits looked like they were also playing with one leg and a couple of tummies. (Was it just me, or did that sweatpants guy's tummy get caught in the net half a dozen times?) The Engineers were undeterred and diligent as ever, building on solid play to take all three games. Craig, Mark and Pat had some excellent hits. Cartoon-ish Pat even had a cross-court 12-footer (perhaps running out of the house with shoes, socks and miscellany overflowing from one's arms is a good pre-game strategy). Leah and Stephy helped to settle our thusfar erratic serving with some well-placed (i.e., over the net and in the court) serves. Most impressively, we played with scrappiness (granted, it was ugly at times) that had us diving and sliding all over the court. Now if we can only figure out how to keep Leah from sneaking away after the games....

Also, here's something I'd like to call "Ode to Pat": Ode to Pat. Oh friend that I woke from a two-hour nap when I called as I was pulling up to pick you up. Oh "Tuna Time!" friend. We thought you were a gonner when you took that gun-serve to the chest. How did you survive the "power" that caused "Umph-Ka-Blech" to emit from your lips as you flew backwards and landed on your back? What powers are in those silver super-hero shoes that have shielded you from harm? And may we humbly suggest you use those same powers to help you pass the ball less bullet-like and higher than two feet? Oh Pitter Patter friend, thanks for making us laugh!

Beer Me
Although out-spiked... we played awesome, scrappy defense and took two out of three from a very strong opponent. (worst recap ever? Keith thinks so)

Fantastics

(from Steph)

Baby got Bic...

"It was amazing... " The Beavs managed to dominate "the old, grunting guy, the old gal, the big guy, the little girl, red shirt guy, and the other girl," (I love the names we come up with for our competitors) despite the worst bumping on record. Craig was unstoppable, smashing set after set and two-hand tipping at just the right time. Keith had trouble spiking the ball when matched up against the other girl (who didn't even try blocking), but redeemed himself when he laid out, and saved, an out-of-court bump. As always, Leah was consistent with her sets and impressed us all with her ambidextrous, Matrix-like, double, high-fives.

"Are you kidding me?!" shouted Craig as Keith kept himself under control and didn't look a tuna in the net. Pat had a nice block against big guy that landed him on his buttocks - it was certainly worthy of double high-fives from Craig though. Overall, it was the best scrappy playing EVER. Dee would agree . . . fa sure.

Hey, oh, EXCUSE ME!!!! Canigetasideoffries? What? You want a side of rice?

What's next? Fans, air horns, the band, coach Kirk with notepad, Headband Bill on the keyboards, chicken walk... Good game, "guys." or is it "guys"?

Out Side
With a week off, the team called Natures Engineers showed up to play some ball. The night's mood was set early with some great warm-up play. Though the team was short one of their permanent players, who was sick with the flu, they were able to pick-up a great addition to the team. With the news of Leah's contract being up and the team in some financial problems… the pick-up of Trina was just what the team needed. To the games we shall go…

The first game felt great. It seemed as though the Beavs were killing their opponents, when in fact it was closer then it felt. With great bumps from the back and the killer sets that the ladies where giving out… it was obvious that the only thing to do was hammer it down. I don't know if there were any big hammers out of Craig or Pat (every one knows Dee and Keith are placement spikers), but the Beavs got it done and won the first game

The second game was a breeze. Pat stepped into the spot light and served like a God. After he raddled off 10 or so points in a row the other team tried to freeze him by calling a time out, but off course you can’t stop a train. As for the rest of the team, Leah had some great bumps, Bic was a setting star, and Craig found the cannon. The game was over before it even got started.

The third game had to be the most fun. Both sides seemed to be having fun. They even let Pat harass their own player," Come on Tony!!!" The Beavs seem to be having one of their better games. There was a good dig from Keith. Dee found his cannon and put some into the back wall (yah, the good old days). Even the girls got into hammering the ball over. Dee had an awesome serving rally going and the girls stayed true to form and set the ball whatever they wanted (some were not as nice). All in all, the Beavs came out on top, taking all three games. By the way, Pat, the three wins were for you kid… or should I say old man.
