0-1

On their first outing as a softball team (and for some, as softball players), the Transfer Road Tigers showed some impressive play despite succumbing to the wiles of their opponent late in the game. We got on base, scored a bunch of runs, and made some stellar, hustling plays. More importantly, the TRT got a chance to hoot and holler -- Much of which would've been quieter without Anne Marie's "play of the game" of trip, fall, and roll on the ground three feet from home plate after hitting the ball. Oh let the highlight reel roll! In preparation for next week, let's take these lessons to heart: 1) Do not schedule a meeting to begin one hour before you're supposed to be at the field coaching; 2) Minh is very concerned about whether or not the other team has a first base coach; 3) No need to brave traffic to retrieve a foul ball; and 4) HIT THE CUT-OFF!!! Great first game, Tigers. Once Astrid downloads some softball cheers from the internet, we'll be set to rule the league!

All in One Appraisal
0-2

"I think I hurt something while running to first base." I might be going out on a limb here, but I think we to need to revamp our pre-game warm-ups. Streching exercises, anyone? Sweet stats from the first three innings include: 1 twisted knee (that Ryan is such a show-off), 5 pulled quads/hamstrings, 2 benched (due to injuries) players, 1 hurt toe -- For a total of 6 out of 13 players injured. I tell ya, it was a coach's dream to see you guys limping around out there....Needless to say, ice and Ibuprofen are going to be special friends to some Tigers for the next several days. Other than doing a fantastic job hurting ourselves, the TRT showed some potential as our first five hitters got on base (Forget that many of these players also hurt themselves at this time). But heads-up, Tigers. Scouting reports indicate that we're going to play some D League teams that actually BELONG in D League -- For you clueless teams out there: If most of your players can hit to the fence, you don't belong in D League. And, when in D League, swing at the white, spherical object making its way towards you....And yes Jenny, a body can play lots of sports and still be squeemish about worms -- especially 12-inch chubby ones. Ick!

Dairy Queen
0-3

Was it me, or were Dairy Queen’s pitcher and first baseman really friendly last night? Anyhoo. I must say that I was pretty impressed with our play. Grrr. The hitting, fielding, and field positioning are all coming together. Special highlights include Mary’s dinger that started our rally in the 6th. Grrr. Kudos to Megan and Dale also for some terrific pitching (Thank goodness I get to decide where I (and other people) play…Seriously. Pitchers are awesome). Let’s also not forget the half-hour stretching and warm-up regiment that limited injuries to only one player. Grrr. Now if we can just get that third out in a timely manner (yeah, that was long), we’ll be set to Tiger-ize our opponents. In preparation for next week, Mark and Ryan are going to research and identify a “watering hole” for the TRT and our many fans. Details soon. Go Orange. GRRR!!!

Okay, so that first inning was ugly. U-G-L-Y, ugly. Um, excuse me ump, can we buy an out with five dollars? No matter. We managed to continue having fun and even had some TRT firsts: First three up three down inning (GADZOOKS!); first seven consecutive outs (Go Defense!); first sliding strawberry; and first scraped up, scratched up bloody knee (Aahh...the return of the run to first base mishaps...Good times...). Move over Advil, here comes the Neosporin. While I look forward to our continuing improvement, I must confess that I most anticipate the baked treats, BBQs, hot tub, and swimming pool experiences that are coming our way (You can bring a sig Stacy). As Ryan and Anne Marie once put it so eloquently, "I'm in it for the beer." Yes, Tigers, we're going to get social. And Mark's bringing "beverages."

Cheeseballs
1-4

Well the TRT managed to pull off a win and hell didn't even have to freeze over. If we thought softball was terrific-fun before, this whole winning thing is putting things into perspective. Having fun AND winning is awesome! Admittedly, I was feeling some deja vu when we were down 7-0 for the first two innings. Unlike previous outings, however, we broke the game open in the third as we started at the top of our line-up. Fantastic hits on our part (New bat?) and timely errors by our opponents helped us build a lead in the fifth that we never relinquished. Highlights included Mary's backstop catch (Not to mention her rice krispy treats--Thanks!); Gunnar and Minh's clutch catches; Tony's pacing/mumbling book-keeping; Caleb's diving stop; Jenny, Dale, Gunnar, and Luke's successful "Pickle" (We didn't even practice!) and of course (Drum roll, please), Mark's striptease/losing his pants (Nice orange boxers) running from third to home ("I'd rather have pull-away pants and not have to use them than need them..."). A nail-biting 14-12 win--This despite missing almost half of our roster. Well done, Tigers. Thanks, fans. Farewell, Luke.

PTC Windchill
1-5
(from Ryan) Coming off their first win, the TRT looked poised to make it two in a row. The Tigers came out of the gate faster than Funny Cide at the Kentucky Derby, racking up 8 runs in the first three innings. However, the lead would not last. The PTC Windchill (what kind of a name is that, anyway?!?) decided to play the walk game and ended up walking in most of their runs (as the umpire said "guys who can't hit, walk"). Megan did yeoman's work as the starting pitcher and Jenny stepped in to try to stop the bleeding in the late innings. Assistant Manager Ryan "ACL" Johnson made a rookie mistake by not brining in a relief pitcher sooner. Highlights of the night included Stacy making circus catches in right field, Megan striking out their biggest hitter and Mark actually swinging the bat for a hit! Overall, the Tigers looked good with some new players making their debut (Tony & Samantha). Thanks to all the TRT fans that made this loss a little easier to swallow.

Know Who You Follow
1-6
(from Mark) Before the game started, many of the Tigers were already sweating. And the sweating continued for a while. We were unable to score any runs until the fifth inning. But a Tiger does not go down without putting up a fight. To avoid the shutout, an unlikely Tiger (Tom, the guy who filled in at the last minute) put a home run on the board in the critical 10-run rule inning. 18-0? No! 18-1! But what really counts is that despite the weather going from hot and muggy to drizzly rain, we kept our spirits up. Adam did great in his first game as pitcher. We held our own against a pretty good team for most of the game. And maybe we learned a thing or two along the way: sports bras stay sweaty for a long time, coaches are capable of turning double plays (nice one, Bic!), not every team in the D league belongs in the D league, and it's ok to go out for beers or buffalo wings even if you don't win. Did anyone happen to notice the tattoo on Tom's leg? A tiger. What if there is no such thing as a coincidence?

Sluggers
1-7
Is the sun, earth, moon, universe, etc. off-kilter or something? Or are we all still recovering from the fourth of July weekend? Because there's something weird in the air....Things were so askew tonight that two of our players chose the American Idol concert over Tigers softball (the audacity!); so out of line that a 20-person roster dominated by women could not field five women for the game; so goofy that Kate managed to end up sprawled face down on the ground while taking a WALK to first base (hilarious!); so awry that the ump called the game after 4-innings (apparently, he was trying to get home to do some yardwork while it was still light out); and so off-balance that we got back onto the field after packing up gloves, etc. to resume the game. Ahh...TRT softball...Gotta love it. And Adam, "Play's at any base...Not including home."

(Also, thanks fans for your support (not to mention KFC chicken). Next week is "Fan Appreciation Day." Details to follow. Bobble-head not included.)

Dahl
1-8
(from Ryan) Before I begin this recap, I want to clear up a couple of things... 1. Minh and Bic are not married. 2. Tony and Mary are not brother and sister. Ok, on with the show... Fan Appreciation Night was fan-effing-tastic - thanks to all the fans that cheered us on! Even though the TRT had a few late arrivals (new field, Minh & Tony) and a new shortstop (no offense but Caleb who?), everyone was in great spirits for this late season match-up against undefeated "Dahl" (maybe they should spend a little less time picking out baseball pants and a little more time coming up with a better name). Despite what might be called a good-old-fashioned-ass-kicking by Dahl, a good time was had by all. Highlights were mostly on defense - Pat made a couple of all-star plays at shortstop (nice cut-off to get the runner out at third), Stacy continued her dominance in the outfield and Minh made a great shoestring catch in left field. The celebration continued after the game at Mark's cooler and Green Mill. Did someone say "pool party" next week?

Northern Lights
1-9

(from Adam) After a quick dispute over potential bat-stealing by a jerk attempting a George Clooney circa-E.R.-days look, we were able to start the game. Through some of Megan’s previous scouting of the team, we were somewhat apprehensive of the Northern Lights. This feeling soon ended as our hot bats gave us an early lead. Although the opposing team did find a way to rally on us, we pulled off a little rally of our own by shutting them out in the final two innings of the game. Highlights included Tony’s inside the park homerun, although I am sure he will get around to touching 2nd base at some point; Pat smashing a ball to the fence and then nearly running on top of Megan to complete the homerun; and generally good catches by everyone. Jenny also had to battle tree and fence to catch foul balls next to third, but was undeterred. The TRT tradition of getting hurt returned with Megan and Adam getting the most beat up. The game ended in a 10-12 loss, but come on!! Is it really a loss if the team DOESN’T lose by the ten-run rule, gets to go to Old Chicago after the game, and still has more fun than the other team? I think we all know the answer…. Next week is the ultimate battle for 2nd to last place. Fans should take note.

P.S. (from Bic) I might add that we’ve made some “progress” in the TRT injuries. We’ve moved from “ordinary” pulled muscles, scrapped knees, and bruised fingers/toes to dislocated shoulders. Yes, despite his shoulder popping out (and immediately back in), Adam managed to make a sweet catch, denying Northern Lights all-star shortstop a third consecutive hit. Ice, ice baby.

RLC
2-9

(from Adam) A perspective from the mound... This was the game to decide 2nd to Last Place. A very important game that would give the TRT bragging rights 9 months until next season to defend the 2nd to Last Place title—ever so coveted in the Roseville Co-Ed D league. RLC started the scoring with their first 7 batters reaching home plate. Things looked dire, but from that point on, the Tigers started to really play. In the most competitive and influential game of the season, the scoring went back and forth as the lead changed almost with each inning. Each Tiger gave it his/her all including a collision between Bic and Caleb in the outfield resulting in both getting the wind knocked out of them and Caleb somehow holding onto the ball. Megan had some clutch pop-fly catches in the outfield. And although there were some close dust-flying plays at the bases that did not go in the Tiger’s favor, we held our resolve. We were also fortunate to finally play our friend, Scrubs, who if you recall from the last game schemed to get a new bat from Caleb. He strutted his stuff at the plate, called for time to kick dirt, and generally threw himself around like a big-man. His antics might have been distracting if not for Mark’s advice from 1st to “Ignore the player! Don’t worry about him. Just throw your pitch.” This advice proved worthy as the pitches finally started to fall in for strikes resulting in Adam’s first 2 strike-out game, both of which came at the end of an inning. Tension filled the air and the stands as the TRT fans kept up their unwavering support. In the bottom of the 6th inning down by 5 runs, the TRT strung together some hits and a few walks to come away with a victory from Tony’s hit to the outfield that brought Pat (albeit, stumbling) home to a 20-19 victory. Cheers and high-fives ensued. Will the Tigers be able to ride this wave of energy to a win on the last game of the season? Fans….next week and your support will only tell.

(from Bic) "We are the champions, my friend..." Well, maybe not the champs, but we WON!!! The battle for Second to Last place see-sawed for the entire game. After several lead changes (Including their 7-1 lead after the first-Anyone else think we were done? Yeah, Pat's with me) and a couple of ties, we went into the last inning tied 14-14. Somehow they managed to score 5 runs. However, the Tigers came roaring back with some smart at-bats (i.e., Walks-Who could pass up the 2-fer deal?!?) and timely hits to win the game 20-19 with no outs. As usual, we played a drama-filled game, highlighted by Adam's homerun in the first, Caleb and Bic's near-death/heart-stopping/concussion-inducing collision in left (Yeah, that hurt), our opponent's Pig Pen player's ("Welcome to the world of the walking wounded") game-stopping mishaps, and Pat's go-ahead run of "Let's roll in the dirt and do a somersault while rounding third" to win the game. Aaahh, the agony and the ecstasy of being a Tiger....On a side note, that Bloomin' Onion (not to mention steak) at Outback was awesome...Anyhoo....Great win, TRT. As usual, thanks fans. Pool party next week. BYOB.

2-10

(from Mark) Tensions ran high for the Tigers as we approached the last game of the season. We were playing the team that the team we beat last week ("Scrubs" and the RLC) had their only win against. We were playing for 2nd to last place in the league. Let's just say winning isn't everything. But it was not all bad. Adam chalked up a couple more strikeouts. Mary made some great plays at home. Dale and Caleb ran into each other to make a Hawley sandwich but Dale came up with the catch. We had some good hitting and base running that got us 4 runs. We wanted our third win badly but making up a 23 run deficit is hard for even the best teams. As we raised our hands at the end of the game shouting "pool party" I think we realized that there's more to life than Co-Rec D-League Softball. But don't tell Bic that. She played in the next game on the side of the Cheeseballs. And rather well for someone with a rib injury. The game was between the two teams that had given us our only two wins playing each other for the battle for second to last place. If the Cheeseballs won, the Tigers are in second to last. If "Scrubs" and his band of RLC outlaws won, the Tigers are at the bottom. I don't know if it was Bic's help or the cheering of a few drunk Tigers but the Cheeseballs pulled it out and we finished SECOND TO LAST! Believe the hype! Mary's cake turned out to be accurate after all! The Tigers did what most people would have thought was impossible. And an extra special thanks goes to Mary for the pool party, the food and the cake. As someone who does not work at Transfer Road, I would like to just say I would much rather play with you than the PTC Windchill team any day. I don't care if you have a broken finger, broken ribs, dread playing softball every week, fall down trying to run the bases, make every catch, miss every catch, get strikeouts, make amazing catches and miss tagging someone out at home, are Mary's brother, are married to Bic, are divorced, have a nipple ring, whatever. You are all invited to my party on Saturday, September 13th! Much like the much talked about CD that still does not exist, y'all are Tha Shitz!

(from Bic) SECOND TO LAST. How sweet it is. Let’s savor the honor, the legacy we’ll be able to pass on to future offspring. And if all goes well, this will help us to forget last night’s debacle. I’m thinking that the horde of gnats did not help things much. Five gnats in each eye aren’t helpful. Unraveling, broken gloves aren’t helpful. An exceptionally good hitting night for Green Machine isn’t helpful. And oh yeah, errors aren’t all that terrific either. No matter. We ended the season with some post-game alcohol revelry at the field and at Mary’s (Some people might want to work on their cheering—“Dr. Ngo, Dr. Ngo” isn’t all that great a cheer). Some terrific stats include a broken finger, bruised ribs, torn ACL, and lots of other scrapes and bruises (And softball is a “no contact” sport!). Here’s to a fun-filled season of BW3, Old Chicago, Green Mill, Rice Krispe Treats, Turbo Oven, Diet Coke in the cake, Shark Hunting, Raft Standing, No throwing me in the pool and Tigers fans! See you at next year’s try-outs. GO TIGERS!!
