Ultra finally arrives on the playoff scene... (from
Joe) Bill. As Ultra entered the playoffs this year they were looking
to continue on the momentum they had from the previous Thursday, and
Bill erase all of the bad taste from play-offs past. Ultra looks sharp
in warm-ups, firing shot after Bill shot over the boards. We came out
on fire, and got an early 'goal' from Andy H. This was a great team
effort all around, with everyone playing Bill big and contributing to
the goals and great defend. You could tell Cobra was getting ready for
a big night. Ian G and Chuck C had some great combinations up front.
In the end, it was Bill's world and we were all just happy to support
him. However, we are now looking for even bigger things from 'one time

(from Joe) Well the better team definitely won. Or maybe not. Regardless, we worked hard, had good patience, and did create a few good opportunities. Cobra solidified his position as one of the top goalies in the league, and came up with dozens of great saves, including 6 in a minute period near the end of the game where he made saves with his stick, glove, feet, hip, and neck. Andy H had two huge goals, one early and the game winner which required a forth effort where he finally put the ball in the net. At the end, we just did what we came out to do - send another team home to pack their gear up for the year. M of the M goes to Andy for two big goals, and to Cobra for his amazing play and confidence. So it was a good night as we matched our win total for the season (2) in a period of 3 hours, and in the history of Ultra broomball we have 2 wins and they both took place on this night. |

COBRA!

Who buttered the ice? Yes, ice is suppose to be slippery, but this kind of slippery is ULTRA's kryptonite. After our best playoff run to date, we ran into a machine in The Bucks. We played tough D early and had unbelievable goaltending from COBRA (wear that M of the M belt with pride this off-season!) to keep us close through the half, but then the wheels fell off the bus. In a blur, The Bucks put up another quick six (at least) ending ULTRA's glorious Cinderella season. Yeah, they were good... but I'd like to see how many burgers, Tic Tacs, rum & Cokes, pizzas, watermelons, Swedish Fish, plates of spaghetti, Chicken McNuggets, potato chips or sheet cakes they could consume. Now that's sport!. Great season Blue! Here's to more in 2006! |

(from
Joe) Well Pat you missed a fine one. We ended up playing a team who really
shouldn't play in our league. The final was 8-1 or something. Ben had
our lone goal off of a nice play and assist from Beau. We looked rusty
and a little confused, but considering the competition I think we did
okay. Considering they were all headed to go and play in a national broomball
tournament in New York today, and a number of their players have been
arrested many times and cannot cross the boarder to Canada (seriously),
something that does help for Broomball, I don't think we need to hang
our helmets too low. One of their players is also on the impact list for
this year, which is the top 10 players in USA Broomball (this is mainly
a MN organization). These are the 10 players that have the most direct
impact on a game if they are or are not there. #11 on their team was the
one I believe - Tom Macalus. See http://www.usabroomball.com/news.htm.
I think another one of their players is also on the elite list, which
lists the next 30 best players. Actually, these players are not allowed
to play in our 'C' league and we could probably protest, but no need.
Regardless it was not really a fair battle (now we know how some of the
teams we play in Ultra soccer feel), and Ultra will come back strong next
week. Hopefully Ian M. and Pat will make their season debuts. In my opinion,
Man of the Match goes to Cobra for 1) showing up and putting all of the
off season goalie controversy to rest and 2) having a very solid game,
as the score would have been much worse without his big time saves.

(from
Craig) Half
of the squad is beach bound, but for those of us who went out for a Juicies,
the consensus......... "Ian was the man of the match". Ultra
controlled the ball and the game in the same manor we were man handled
in our first game of the season. Despite the weather we managed to stay
warm with frequent subbing and quick ball movement. Good game last night!
(from Ben) Complete domination. Beau, Charlie and Ian, we missed you guys
last night but look forward to having you back on the ice next week. And
we're all obviously rooting for Pat's quick recovery and return. We schooled
'em last night, fellas, but I don't think next week's match will be quite
such a cake walk. Ian G. definitely took the honors last night for Man-of-the-Match
- congrats. In the next week or so we'll be adding a little extra incentive
for that accomplishment - details to come.

By
the time I got there (maybe ten minutes in), it was already 0-4. I guess
they ripped off a few good shots. Everything I saw from there (especially
the second half) was complete ULTRA control. Unfortunately, it was tough
to penetrate their clog the middle D and then ice the ball the length
of the rink. Here's to a better start and a greater man of the match prize
next week.

Ben
(even if the belt didn't fit)

They
were good. They shot well, intercepted a number of our passes, got out
on the break and were great at moving the ball around. Ben did get a beauty
and we had some times of pressure, but they tended to have a slightly
higher level of the skills many a broomball player might want to possess.
Thanks for letting me man the goal in my first ULTRA experience of the
season. It was nice to dawn the blue. High expectation for next week...
let's end this regular season flying (and with some post game fun!)!

Now, if we could just get Olowokandi an ULTRA jersey. To overstate the obvious... it feels pretty good to win, especially in that fashion. With the sticky ice playing to our athleticism, ULTRA out-hustled and outplayed an overmatched Rail Station with one of our most impressive team victories in some time. Contributions came from everywhere. Tight goaltending from Jamie (particularly early on when the game was tight [cover it!] and even when his own team [Craig] was shooting on him), goals from Bill (2), Knockdown High-Fiver Ian (2), Pat (2), "Big Swing" Benny and Craig, and big coast to coast hustle from the white helmet brothers, Charlie and Silver Stone Todd (who setup our first goal). Everyone had a legitimate bid at man of the match... but that honor fell on team founder Joey Z. for his all-over the place type play and fancy stick and footwork that left our opponents swinging at air. Nice finish to the regular season. See you in the playoffs! |
